Offering for the true lovers of nature adventures - learn about the jungles of Uganda, spot chimpanzees and gorillas during some of the most unusual expeditions.
Kampala is the capital of Uganda and its biggest city that is safe even for the night walks. The city is located at the bank of the Lake Victoria and by area was compared with 'the size of Latvia' by Jeremy Clarkson during one of the Top Gear expeditions. On the next day take a longer travel time to the Kalinzu Forest Reserve to visit chimpanzees in their natural habitat. The forest trails offer amazing views over the Rwenzori Mountains, the Lake Edward, the Kazinga Channel and the Congo River. The Kalinzu Forest Reserve is rich with local legends you will hear from a local guide. Then travel through gorgeous countryside to the Lake Bunyoni, the base for several days in the area. This mountainous area and the forest-sloped volcanoes are the home to approximately half of the world's population of mountain gorillas, the world's most endangered ape. Ugandan authorities are fiercely protective of this natural treasure and currently permit only a maximum of 8 people per day to visit a given gorilla family. Therefore the group is usually split into smaller sub-groups for the trek. Enjoy the local mountain guides and porters' services that can carry your personal items and assist you during the trek, as well as get acquainted with the etiquette of gorilla trekking.
The trek can take from one to six hours as gorillas constantly move, and there is a slight possibility of not finding animals at all. The terrain is rough and at times muddy and slippery, and the altitude can exceed 2500 m. For the rest of your time in the area, you will have the chance of several optional activities such as fishing, canoeing on the lake, visiting the local community or renting a mountain bike to explore the area. Then head to the city of Mbarara, where you can visit local markets or the Safarilanda Park, the African style complex of the bars and restaurants built on the side of a hill overlooking the Rwizi, for instance. Then head south to Jinja at the shores of the Lake Victoria, the source of the Nile River. Spend a full day rafting or kayaking down the Nile River, mountain biking in the Mabira Forest, volunteering with a local project, or just enjoying the relaxed vibe of Jinja. We recommend you to visit Bujagali waterfalls. Then transfer back to Uganda's capital where the tour finishes upon arrival in the late morning.
